Jordan Spieth has been added to the field for next week’s Cognizant Classic.

Spieth, who has never played the annual PGA Tour stop at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, was announced as committing about an hour and a half after the initial field list dropped. Spieth’s addition bumps Karl Vilips to first alternate, meaning 10 Korn Ferry Tour graduates will begin the week on the alternate list.

Also in the Cognizant field are three top-20 players in the world – Russell Henley (17), Sepp Straka (18) and Shane Lowry (19) – and amateur Luke Clanton, who is a made cut away from a PGA Tour card and playing on a sponsor invite.

There are still five spots not filled, four via the Monday qualifier and one unrestricted sponsor exemption.

Spieth, who underwent left-wrist surgery last August, has played three times this year – T-69 at Pebble, T-4 at Phoenix and a recent MC at Genesis. He said recently on the Smylie Show that he was a “legit 4- to 6-handicap” two weeks before returning at Pebble. He is currently No. 67 in the world rankings.

“Honestly, the meteoric rise from then until now has been some of the most impressive improvement in my game that I’ve ever had,” Spieth told host Smylie Kaufman, “but that’s not saying a whole lot because I started lower than I had since I was probably 9 [years old].”

Spieth didn’t reveal his intentions to play Cognizant on that podcast, though he did say he was looking forward to the Florida Swing with its warm weather and Bermudagrass. He is in The Players, though would need a sponsor exemption for the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which is between Cognizant and The Players.

“I really wish I got more out of last week,” Spieth added. “Having said that, I’ve made the cut at Torrey once in 10 years – and that was the U.S. Open. … I’m going to try and piggyback off of Phoenix for these next couple weeks of prep and then go into these hard golf courses and play them smart.”
