Fortaleza has been eliminated from the 2025 edition of the Libertadores.

The Brazilian team was defeated 2-0 by Vélez Sarsfield away from home this Tuesday (19th), in the second leg of the round of 16.

The teams had drawn 0-0 in the first leg at Castelão.

With this result, Vélez is the first club guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament this year.

The opponent for the next round will come from the match between Peñarol and Racing, who play the second leg of their tie later this Tuesday in Argentina.

The Uruguayan team won the first leg in Uruguay by a score of 1-0.

Vélez was the better team on the field for most of the game and opened the scoring early.

After a free kick into the box, Carrizo rose unmarked and headed the ball into the net in the sixth minute.

The Argentine team extended their lead still in the first half.

Galvan received a beautiful pass inside the area and finished well to find the back of the net.

Fortaleza posed little attacking threat during the first half and had their best chances to score after the break.

Lucca Prior even hit the post with a beautiful shot from outside the box.

However, the team led by Renato Paiva showed few other signs of a comeback on the field.
