If hockey fans went to sleep early on Tuesday night, they might have missed a late-night trade between the Detroit Red Wings and Utah Hockey Club.
Former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Määttä, who won the Stanley Cup with the club in 2016 and 2017, was dealt from the Red Wings to Utah for a third-round draft pick in 2025.
Määttä was in his third season with Detroit and had no points in seven games, averaging 15:52 a night.
The former first-round pick (22nd overall) from the 2012 Draft will transition to his fifth NHL club after spending the first six seasons with the Penguins from 2013 to 2019.
He scored 107 points in 362 games before a trade in June 2019 sent him to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Määttä spent 65 games with the Blackhawks before another trade sent him to Los Angeles, where he played 107 games over two seasons. As a free agent in 2022, he signed with the Red Wings, where he collected 41 points in his last 157 games.
