On Thursday, the Rocket Classic commenced for it seventh edition at the Detroit Golf Club, bringing the PGA Tour back to Detroit. A late addition to the field, former Spartan and United States Amateur champion James Piot was added thanks to a sponsors exemption.

The former Spartan and Canton (MI) native, who started his professional career with the LIV Golf Tour, returned to the PGA Tour. On Thursday, Piot had a late afternoon tee time at the Detroit Golf Club, getting his tournament underway.

Despite a slow, and ultimately boring start, Piot broke through with a very exciting back nine. It all led to a final score of 70 (-2), with the former Spartan shooting 35-35 on the two nines. He finished with four birdies and two bogeys.

Sitting at T87 on the standings, but is only one shot off of the placing that would be inside of the cutline, Piot is firmly in the mix to be able to make the weekend at his hometown PGA Tour event.

He will tee off at 8:35 a.m. on the tenth tee on Friday.
