Former Espanyol coach asks fans not to turn on new Barcelona signing – ‘Would have liked to leave in a better way’

The transfer of Joan Garcia to Barcelona has sparked emotional reactions among the Espanyol fans, many of whom feel betrayed by the departure of one of last season’s standout performers, especially to their eternal rival.

However, former Espanyol manager Vicente Moreno has stepped in to offer a more measured and understanding perspective on the situation.

Understanding the situation

Speaking to El Larguero on Cadena SER (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Moreno acknowledged the frustration among Espanyol supporters but urged them not to villainise the young goalkeeper. “I understand the fans. I’m respectful of their feelings,” he said.

But he also highlighted the complexity of the situation for Joan Garcia. “It certainly hasn’t been easy for him. He would have liked to leave in a better way,” Moreno explained, noting that the transfer will bring in €25 million for the club.

Moreno, who gave Garcia his first-team debut during his tenure, knows the player intimately. He praised Garcia not just as an athlete but as a product of Espanyol’s system, recalling,

“We mustn’t forget the Joan who has been part of this club since he was 15.” His words reflected both admiration for the player’s loyalty during his development years and sympathy for his difficult decision to leave.

Time heals wounds

Rather than focus on the rivalry or the bitterness surrounding the transfer, Moreno chose to look ahead with optimism. He acknowledged that feelings are raw right now, but believes reconciliation is possible.

“I hope time heals the wounds and that this decision doesn’t erode,” he said, appealing to fans for common sense and long-term thinking.

The move may sting for now, but Moreno’s comments serve as a reminder of Joan Garcia’s contributions to Espanyol and the professionalism behind his decision.

As tensions cool, perhaps fans will reflect more on Garcia’s legacy rather than the shirt he now wears.
