Though things are not looking bright in Dallas amid a 4-7 start to the season, the sun continues to shine into AT&T Stadium on Sunday afternoons.
The blinding glare coming through the windows has been a major talking point this season and has led to on-field issues. Several current Cowboys players have voiced their frustration this year, and a former member of the organization didn’t hold back on the issues with AT&T Stadium.
Wide receiver Brice Butler, who played in Dallas from 2015 to 2017, told ESPN’s Kalyn Kahler what it was like having to battle the sun during games.
“It sucked, but our coaches would say, you just gotta make plays,” Butler said. “You’re paid to make plays, so…”
According to Kahler, Butler talked to Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones about the issue after both he and former receiver Dez Bryant missed passes because of the sun.
“Dak (Prescott) threw me a nice rope nine ball [fade route], and I was open,” Butler said. “I was trying to catch in the sun, and I squeezed my hands closed right as the ball got to my hand, so I didn’t catch it.”
In Dallas’ blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this season, star receiver CeeDee Lamb missed what would have been a touchdown pass after seemingly being affected by the sun. He said after the game that he would “1,000 percent” be in favor of curtains at AT&T Stadium.
Still, even as the sun becomes increasingly more of an issue, team owner Jerry Jones has no plans of making modifications to the stadium.
“Well let’s tear the damn stadium down and build another one? Are you kidding me? Everybody has got the same thing,” Jones said, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “Every team that comes in here has the same issues. I’m saying, the world knows where the sun is. You get to know that almost a year in advance. Someone asked me about the sun. What about the sun? Where’s the moon?”
Whether because of the sun or other issues, the Cowboys have yet to win a game at AT&T Stadium this season. They’ll look to finally do so on Thursday when they take on the New York Giants.
