Liverpool decided to part ways with Luis Diaz earlier this summer with the Colombian winger joining Bayern Munich for an initial £60m.

And question marks still remain over other performers in the wide positions – such as Ben Doak and Harvey Elliott.

It has led to some concerns that the Reds are leaving themselves slightly short in attack – although new signings like Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong can feature on the wing.

For the Reds’ opening Premier League fixture – against Bournemouth on Friday night – Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo started while Rio Ngumoha and Federico Chiesa were on the bench as options for Arne Slot.

Chiesa caps remarkable comeback with a goal

Chiesa was sprung from the bench with the Anfield side requiring inspiration in the final moments of the game – and the Italian did not disappoint.

The 27-year-old netted his first-ever Premier League goal to put the champions 3-2 ahead before Mo Salah completed the scoring to make it 4-2 in injury time.

The goal caps a remarkable comeback from Chiesa – whose Liverpool fate appeared sealed earlier this summer.

Indeed it was widely speculated that he would be on his way back to Serie A – with AC Milan and Napoli most closely linked with his signature.

But due to Liverpool’s shortage of wingers at the outset of the season – with transfer focus now on Alexander Isak – it has given Chiesa a second chance at a Liverpool career.

Romano: This is a NEW Chiesa

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who claims that this is a brand NEW Federico Chiesa – freshly inspired to take the unexpected opportunity that has come his way.

“He wants to stay at Liverpool,” the Italian transfer supremo said on YouTube. “Liverpool decided to put their effort on a striker, Isak, rather than on a winger. And so Chiesa started to say, okay, maybe I can be that winger who can help the squad.

“Well, he completely changed his approach and now Arne Slot is very happy with him.

“Chiesa is showing his quality, a crucial goal for Liverpool. But it’s not just about the goal. You can see the approach, it’s a completely different Federico. Physically, he’s in a fantastic shape and so at the moment happy to stay at Liverpool.”

Serie A sides remain interested

There remains interest in Chiesa from Serie A and Liverpool could end up fielding bids before the end of the window. But one thing is for sure – Chiesa is demonstrating his value on the pitch.

Finding a replacement with such class and experience would be no mean feat.

“Waiting to see what happens on the market because we never know maybe an important proposal comes from Italy,” said Romano. “But at the moment Chiesa very happy to stay at Liverpool.”
