Fabrizio Romano has confirmed it’s still possible for Liverpool to sign a midfielder after the transfer deadline.
Despite the signing of Bradley Barcola, it has been a pretty underwhelming window for the Reds.

Ultimately, Liverpool brought in Victor Munoz and Ronald Araujo, while reinforcing the squad with a handful of youth signings including Lucca Brughmans who became the most expensive U23 goalkeeper of all time.
While all of these signings are individually exciting and made a lot of sense for Liverpool, they don’t fix the core of Andoni Iraola’s problems.
The Spaniard made it clear he wanted multiple signings throughout the summer, but his demands were never addressed.
It means Liverpool go into the season with a largely inexperienced and relatively small squad.
The mission will be to stick together and to ride out the storm until the January window when those needs might be addressed.

But there are alternative solutions.
Liverpool’s midfield transfer stance explained
The Reds sold Curtis Jones early in August to Inter Milan. There was an expectation after his departure that Liverpool would go into the market to replace him.
However, no such move was made. Instead, Liverpool have decided to promote Trey Nyoni, who caught the eye in pre-season.
On paper, Liverpool’s midfield depth is relatively strong with Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch. Meanwhile, Wataru Endo and James McConnell provide alternative solutions behind Nyoni.
However, if Szoboszlai is asked to play right-back again, that depth is going to be significantly weaker.

Ultimately, Liverpool have agreed long-term deals with Szoboszlai and Gravenberch. They rejected a transfer offer from Nottingham Forest for Nyoni because they value him as a long-term option.
Whether that is the case for Endo and Mac Allister is moot. The former has a contract expiring in 2027, meanwhile the latter’s deal expires in 2028 with no extension in sight.
Fabrizio Romano’s update gives Liverpool an opportunity
The transfer window might be closed for now but teams can still make acquisitions to bring in free agents.
These free agents won’t be able to play unless there is a space available for them to be registered.

And well, there might be a chance for Liverpool to make a move for a record-breaking midfielder who has been on the club’s radar in the past.
Romano has confirmed that PSG have released Renato Sanches, who has now become a free agent.
The Portuguese midfielder was the youngest player to play in a European Championship final and the youngest to win the tournament before that record was broken by Lamine Yamal.
Sanches’ career has taken a pretty steep downward decline since then. But if Liverpool were desperate they could still sign the midfielder. He is only 29-years-old after all and has experienced playing at the highest level.
