Upon entering the Maracanã field this Tuesday (19th), against América de Cali, for the return leg of the South American round of 16, Fábio became the player with the most matches played in the history of world football.
The 44-year-old Fluminense goalkeeper reached 1,391 games, surpassing Peter Shilton (an English goalkeeper who played between 1966 and 1997) to stand alone as the “biggest game lover” of all time!
The Fluminense goalkeepers, in fact, play with a special patch in honor of this achievement.
Fábio joined Fluminense in 2022 and won the Carioca championship twice (2022 and 2023), the 2023 Libertadores, and the 2024 South American Recopa. The goalkeeper has a contract with the Tricolor until December 2026.
In addition to the 235 matches for Fluminense, Fábio played 976 games for Cruzeiro, 150 for Vasco, and another 30 for União Bandeirante, the club that discovered him in 1997.
