Denny Hamlin is on baby watch again during the NASCAR Michigan race weekend.
Hamlin, the driver of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, and his fiancée, Jordan Fish, are awaiting the birth of their third child, a son. Hamlin also was on baby watch during the June 1 NASCAR Nashville race.
“Just patiently waiting,” Hamlin said June 7 in a release from NASCAR. “Thought we’d be almost a week in by now, but just patiently waiting.”
Hamlin said in a release from NASCAR that he would miss the Mexico City race if the situation called for it.
Amazon Prime Video pit reporter Marty Snider reported during qualifying that Hamlin flew from North Carolina to Michigan, landing at 6 a.m. local time, to qualify. Hamlin qualified third for the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
The current plan is for Hamlin to fly back to Michigan to be back in time for the race at 1 p.m. CT on June 8.
If Hamlin is called back to North Carolina, or even stays home, Ryan Truex, younger brother of Martin Truex Jr., will step in and run the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
The idea is for Hamlin to receive a waiver from NASCAR if he is not able to run the race. Denny Hamlin is third in the NASCAR Cup Series points standings with 443 in 14 races, 104 points behind William Byron. If Hamlin starts the race and has to leave, he would earn the points.
“He’s been working in the sim to get acclimated,” Hamlin said of Truex in a release from NASCAR. “I was worried about him reaching my pedals first of all. But it sounds like he fits fine. If they had overnight to adjust it, if that’s the case, if I get called tonight, they’ll be able to move the pedals back to make it all fit right for him. But overall, we’re basically the same kind of body size, so he’ll take over.”
Hamlin and Fish plan to have the baby prior to the NASCAR Mexico City race.
