Devin Haney hadn’t fought since getting knocked down several times against Ryan Garcia last year. Dealing with legal matters and the injuries suffered at the hands of Garcia, Haney was ready to face “King Ry” in a rematch. Though he won his return fight, the status of that contest is unknown.
In the middle of Times Square, Haney (32-0) beat Jose Carlos Ramirez via unanimous decision. The former undisputed lightweight champion earned a win, but it was not the type of performance that will be discussed around the office’s water cooler.
Haney didn’t let his hands go for the first few rounds in a no-risk, high-reward performance. He was stuck by the ropes, even while landing a few jabs. Those jabs, a staple of his successful career, did not have the same juice as in previous contests.
His cause wasn’t helped by not taking advantage of Ramirez (29-2), who was also not giving much value through the fight.

A former champion, Ramirez was landing one punch at a time. He tried landing body shots but to no avail. By round eight, Haney offered some form of entertainment with combination shots. He even landed hooks to the head. However, Ramirez, despite losing, looked like the fresher fighter.
Both labored around the ring until the end. Haney landed sharp punches but couldn’t take advantage of the lack of effort by Ramirez, who is now 2-2 in his last four fights.
Haney’s performance was ridiculed by those on social media and the broadcast. Only 503 combined punches were thrown between both fighters. It is the fourth-fewest amount in a 12-round fight in CompuBox’s 40-year history.
Garcia and Haney are scheduled to compete in a rematch later this year. Garcia himself got knocked down and lost against former sparring partner Rolando Romero. It is unknown what their statuses will be now. However, their performances could balance one another out.
