The Detroit Lions finally filled the last spot on their 53-man roster, signing wide receiver Tom Kennedy from the practice squad to the active roster. To backfill Kennedy’s spot on the practice squad, Detroit added defensive back Natrone Brooks.
Kennedy’s addition to the 53-man roster was expected, even if the delay was a bit odd. Earlier in the week, coach Dan Campbell leaked that Kennedy would play in Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, and special teams coordinator Dave Fipp confirmed he would be the team’s starting punt returner, while also being in the mix at kick returner.

Kennedy has been on and off the Lions’ roster for the past seven years. Detroit raves about his work ethic and his ability to provide depth to all of the wide receiver positions. It’s quite possible he’s the WR4 on the team behind starters Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Isaac TeSlaa. Former UFL receiver Tay Martin is also in that competition.
As for Brooks, he has spent the last four offseasons with the Atlanta Falcons. He made a total of 26 game appearances and one start over the last two seasons. He initially made Atlanta’s 53-man roster this year, but after they claimed three players, he was cut and cleared waivers last week.
While Brooks, 26, has previously spent the last three years in Atlanta working as a cornerback, he made the transition to safety this offseason. It’s unclear what position the Lions view him as, but Detroit could use a little more depth and insurance at safety while Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph are out.
