Derry City picked up their second win of the season as they edged Sligo Rovers 1-0 in the Premier Division.

Michael Duffy scored the only goal of the game at the Showgrounds early in the first half with a free-kick.

The result, which was Derry’s first away win of the season, moved Tiernan Lynch’s side off the bottom of the table and up to seventh.

Their next game after the international break comes against Shamrock Rovers on Friday 28 March.

The Candystripes broke the deadlock on 20 minutes as Duffy’s flighted free-kick evaded everyone in the box and nestled in the far corner.

There was confusion surrounding the awarding of the goal however as the linesman initially flagged for offside.

Referee Rob Hennessy overruled his assistant as he did not believe anyone had touched the ball on the way in and so the goal stood.

Before that Sam Todd had to clear the ball off the line after Jad Hakiki had lobbed Brian Maher.

Lynch’s side, who lost Sadou Diallo to a suspected broken arm in the first half, had a chance to double their lead in their first shot on target in the second half.

An inviting ball dropped to substitute Danny Mullen in the box, but he shot straight at Conor Walsh.

Clear-cut chances remained at a premium at the Showgrounds until the closing stages of the game when Maher made himself big to thwart Stephen Mallon.
