Denny Hamlin landed his third victory of the NASCAR Cup Series season, coming out ahead in a fuel-mileage contest Sunday afternoon at Michigan International Speedway.

Hamlin led just five of the 200 laps in Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400, guiding the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to a 1.099-second margin of victory. His third win at the 2-mile Michigan track was the 57th of his Cup Series career.

Chris Buescher placed second in the No. 17 RFK Racing Ford. Ty Gibbs wound up third with Bubba Wallace fourth and Kyle Larson completing the top five.

Alex Bowman finished last in the 36-car field after a severe multicar crash in the 67th lap. Bowman’s No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet made head-on contact with the Turn 2 wall after a tangle with Austin Cindric and Cole Custer, which also collected pole-starter Chase Briscoe and Daniel Suárez. Bowman was evaluated and released from the infield care center.

Buescher and William Byron divided the stage wins. Byron led a race-best 98 laps but his No. 24 Chevrolet sputtered out of fuel on the next-to-last lap.

Michigan native Carson Hocevar led 32 laps but a flat tire with 19 laps to go knocked him from contention for his first Cup Series win.

The Cup Series’ next race is the Viva Mexico 250, scheduled Sunday (3 p.m. ET, Prime Video, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The event will be the series’ first in Mexico.
