Denny Hamlin will not race in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Mexico City on June 15 following the birth of his son, Joe Gibbs Racing announced on June 12.
Ryan Truex will race in the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on Sunday in the first Cup Series points race ever in Mexico.
Hamlin and JGR will apply for a waiver to keep his Hamlin’s playoff points and eligibility. The birth of a child is stated as an acceptable reason to miss a race and receive a waiver under the current rules.
Hamlin has three race victories this season, including a win at Michigan last weekend.
Hamlin also released a statement on social media on Thursday: “We are happy to announce the birth of our son. Everyone is doing well. My main priority is to be here at home for Jordan (Fish, Hamlin’s fiancee) and our family over the next few days when she is able to go home and we transition to life as a family of five.”
