David Benavidez has officially taken over Cinco de Mayo weekend as the challenges Gilberto Ramirez on May 2 for the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles.
Benavidez (31-0) is a two-time WBC super middleweight champion. The 29-year-old moved to light heavyweight and beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the interim WBC belt. He successfully defended it against David Morrell before becoming the full-time champion.
After a fight against Canelo Alvarez never materialized, Benavidez is creating his own path to greatness. He’s ready to move up another weight class and secure more gold against a former sparring partner.
“This is something I’ve been working toward for a long time. We’ve had so many great sparring sessions, and I told Zurdo then, we’ll have to do this on pay-per-view one day. Now we’re going for two titles on May 2, and I’m very grateful,” Benavidez said.

Ramirez (48-1) dominated the super middleweight division for years. “Zurdo” lost the first fight of his career in 2022 when Dmitry Bivol outpointed him to retain light heavyweight gold. The 34-year-old moved to cruiserweight and won the WBA and WBO belts.
The B-side here despite being champion, the champion looks to make a statement on fight night.
“I know Team Benavidez, they actually helped me a lot for my first world title fight… He’s the monster. He’s different. He used to beat up a lot of sparring partners. Now we’re here, we’re two warriors, and we’re making history,” Ramirez said.
