In his first game with the Boston Red Sox, infielder Curtis Mead was forced to exit early after being hit on the hand by a pitch.
Mead, who was just acquired from the Washington Nationals on July 26, took a 95 mph fastball from Athletics starting pitcher Jack Perkins off his left wrist in the top of the fourth inning Monday night and initially remained in the game. However, he was replaced at second base in the bottom of the fifth by Anthony Sigler.

Mead told reporters after the game that X-rays showed “everything looks OK” and he’s hopeful he’ll be able to play on Tuesday in Sacramento.
“Walking in the clubhouse (I was) just super disappointed. I wanted to come here and help the team and wanted to play, so yeah, it’s frustrating,” Mead said.
He said he tried to swing a bat after he was hit, but “it didn’t really feel great.”

Red Sox manager Chad Tracy admitted afterward that it “looks like we dodged a bullet, maybe.” Mead will undergo more tests on Tuesday.
