OLD HICKORY — Cumberland’s men fired a 274 Tuesday in the final round to jump up six spots and finish second at the Music City Invitational hosted by Trevecca at the Hermitage Golf Course. The Phoenix fired their three lowest rounds of the year capped with their best yet at six-under as a team. Cumberland started the day in eighth place and moved all the way up to second with the second-best score of the day.
“I am really proud of the guys,” said head coach Rich Williams. “They put together a great tournament from start to finish. They were prepared and executed and I am really proud of them.”
Union (Tenn.) won the tournament after finishing 10-under par through 54-holes. The Bulldogs notched the best score of the tournament in the final round shooting a 10-under 270. Cumberland came in 16 strokes behind Union. Carson-Newman finished in third place at 848 followed by Hillsdale at 851 and Delta State in fifth at 852.
Joel Berry fired a five-under 65 in the final round to skyrocket up to a Top 10 finish, tying for eighth. Berry carded six birdies on the day with just one bogey. Berry totaled a 208 in the tournament.
Kalle Marttinen shot a three-under 67 in the final round to finish tied for 31st place. Marttinen picked up four birdies and one bogey. He played the front-nine three-under-par and went even on the back. He totaled 216 strokes in the tournament. Marttinen moved up 29 spots on day two.
Bailey Rousseau was the second-highest finisher for Cumberland tying for 17th place with 212 strokes. Rousseau shot an even-par 70 in the final round. He posted three birdies and three bogeys in the round.
Garrett McMellon posted a four-over 74 in his final round. He had one birdie on No. 2 with five bogeys on the round. He finished tied for 31st with 216 strokes.
Patrick Chesnut shot a 72 in his final round to end with 219 strokes in three rounds. Chesnut moved up nine spots to tie for 42nd place in the tournament. Chesnut recorded three birdies and five bogeys in his round.
