The Dallas Cowboys will be without wide receiver Jonathan Mingo for the start of the season.

Mingo tweaked his right knee while making a catch on the sidelines during the Cowboys’ 31-13 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday. He remained in the game briefly, but eventually left the contest early.

Further testing on Monday then revealed that he had sprained his PCL and could now miss up to six weeks recovering, according to The Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins.

If he misses the full six weeks, Mingo could return in time for the Cowboys’ matchup with the New York Jets on Oct. 5. That would mean that he misses their first four contests of the regular season.

The Panthers first selected Mingo with the No. 39 overall pick in the 2023 draft out of Ole Miss. The team dealt him to the Cowboys midway through last season ahead of the deadline. The 24-year-old ended up making five catches for 46 yards in eight games mostly off the bench in Dallas last season.

Though Mingo isn’t the top wide receiver in Dallas — CeeDee Lamb had 1,194 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 101 catches last season to lead the team, and they also struck a deal to acquire George Pickens this offseason — he was expected to be a solid backup at the position who could make a meaningful impact.

The Cowboys are coming off a 7-10 campaign, which snapped a streak in which they won 12 games and made the playoffs for three consecutive years. They’ll open the regular season on Sept. 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
