As the Dallas Cowboys look to find some way to build any positive momentum, head coach Mike McCarthy’s job is safe.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told The Athletic’s Dianna Russini that he “has no plans to fire” McCarthy or any of the team’s coordinators, nor does he intend to make any moves prior to the Nov. 5 trade deadline.

Jones has had an eventful week, though not for good reasons. He pushed back against questions during an appearance on Shan & RJ on 105.3 The Fan (h/t Jon Machota of The Athletic) on Tuesday about the state of the team following a 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 6.

Russini noted that Jones succeeded in deflecting all of the attention away from the Cowboys’ on-field issues, but it doesn’t change that this is still a deeply flawed team that looks like it will struggle to make the playoffs.

It’s not a surprise the Cowboys won’t be active ahead of the trade deadline. Jones spent the entire offseason talking about their cap situation. They were the last team to sign an external free agent, and their biggest addition was linebacker Eric Kendricks.

The Cowboys enter their bye in Week 7 with a 3-3 record, with all three losses coming at home. They rank 19th in the scoring offense and 30th in scoring defense after ranking in the top seven in both categories in each of the past three seasons.

Last week’s 38-point loss to the Lions was the Cowboys’ largest margin of defeat at home since November 1988, three months before Jones purchased the franchise.

Unless Jones just wants to make change for the sake of making a change, there’s no point in moving on from McCarthy right now.

Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer might be an obvious candidate as an interim because of his eight seasons as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, but the performance of his defense doesn’t exactly inspire confidence he can turn around the entire team.

McCarthy is in the final season of a five-year contract he signed with the Cowboys in January 2020. He could be coaching his final games with the organization anyway.

It seems like Jones is content to just let things play out before deciding if he wants to make a coaching change in the offseason.

Dallas will play the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium coming out of the bye in Week 8. The 49ers have won three straight games in the rivalry, with two of the victories coming in the playoffs.
