Manchester City’s Premier League struggles during the 2024/25 campaign have been discussed at length previously, and as manager Pep Guardiola and the board looked forward to the future, there was a conscious effort to attempt to revamp the available first team options in an effort to avoid those problems rearing their head again.

Everybody knows the Etihad Stadium had a proverbial revolving door over the summer with plenty of departures and new talent arriving through the door, and arguably that process has not ended just yet with plenty of reshaping expected during this coming summers’ transfer window.

The 2025/26 campaign has been a decent one though as Guardiola continues to bed in his new signings, not least owing to slight tactical tweaks that have been made to City’s previously preferred style of play and approach to games.

Whilst no City fan would call the season to date perfect, it has been more than acceptable for a rebuild and semi transition year. As football fans up and down the country prepare for the true business end of a campaign, as they will know history is on their side when it comes to exciting, enthralling and entertaining string finishes in the race for the title.

As the top flight calendar moves towards the month of March, City are again well placed to end the season strongly as Pep searches for yet another league title success and in recent games the side have begun chipping away at the buffer Arsenal had managed to build up.

Four points stands between City and top spot and historically this is where the squad are at their best, chasing down an opponent with a history of wobbling and bottling it when the pressure ramps up.

On paper Arsenal would have the slight advantage as they arguably have the easier run in out of the two sides, but the recent form chart is already on City’s side and despite a perceived harder schedule, confidence will definitely be high.

Whilst a tricky Aston Villa side, given their own continued improvement this year, will be an interesting test on the final day of the campaign, the all important fixture will be the head to head with Arsenal in mid-April on home City soil.

Not only could that be all important in establishing an advantage in top spot based on how other fixtures go until that point (and the effect that has on the points buffer) – it will undoubtedly also be a major confidence boost for the side that takes the win and all three points, and have a demoralising effect on the loser.

Again suiting Pep here is the fact that he has been here before and he has come out lifting the trophy and silverware with his City charges, whereas Mikel Arteta has regularly seen his side fold at the key moments to slip into the runners up spot.

If Arsenal manage to extend their buffer in the next few weeks, that naturally makes City’s task far harder when you look at the relevant opposition on paper, but if City continue to chip away at that gap and the sides are level pegging by April at latest, history says the Premier League crown will return to the Etihad and Manchester for yet another year.
