It’s safe to say Sergio Jimenez had a practice round he’ll never forget Tuesday.

The sophomore on Utah’s men’s golf team shot 13-under 59 during a practice round at Kukui’ula in Hawaii. The number is significant because no one in the history of college golf has broken 60 in competition. The previous course record was 62.

The Utes, ranked 16th in the country, are in Hawaii to begin their spring season at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which kicks off Thursday at the Ocean Course at Hokuala. The Burns is the seventh-longest running college golf event in the country.

In the history of college golf, 19 men and only one woman have shot 60. The last man to reach the milestone happened in the fall as Joonho Kim of Division II Embry-Riddle shot 60 in the first round at the Shark Invitational in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Oct. 7.

In four stroke-play starts this year, Jimenez has one win at the Palouse Collegiate and two top-five finishes. He also went 4-0-1 at Big 12 Match Play. Jimenez is ranked 22nd in the NCAA golf rankings heading into the spring.
