It’s often the case in college football that the quietest weekends, on paper, end up being the most chaotic. No one expected much from a Week 6 slate that featured just two games pitting ranked opponents against one another, especially after Week 5 was jam-packed with top 25 matchups.
So it makes sense that the sixth week of the college football season may be one of the most impactful all year. Saturday was host to a litany of major upsets that, in some cases, completely derailed otherwise promising seasons.
None of those upsets were more stunning than previously winless UCLA’s 42-37 victory over No. 7 Penn State. The Bruins became the first team since 1985 to beat a top-10 opponent while boasting a record of 0-4 or worse. It also snapped Penn State’s 34-game winning streak against unranked opponents, a new low in the James Franklin era.
In one afternoon, Penn State went from comfortably in the College Football Playoff race to, potentially, outside the top 25 entirely. As did No. 9 Texas, which suffered its own disastrous defeat at the hands of Florida.
The Gators entered Saturday with their own share of struggles and a 1-3 record, but they may have turned a corner by overcoming Texas 29-21. The Longhorns still have yet to beat a Power Four conference opponent after entering the 2025 campaign ranked No. 1.
Though it obviously got overshadowed as the day went on, No. 14 Iowa State’s loss at Cincinnati is as impactful as the other shocking results. The Cyclones have a long climb back to national relevancy and will likely have to play for a championship to get anywhere near the College Football Playoff.
