  • A new report alleges Chevrolet will replace the Corvette E-Ray with a Grand Sport X variant.
  • The GSX will pair General Motors’ new 6.7-liter LS6 V8 engine with an electric motor.
  • The Corvette Grand Sport X could make as much as 720 horsepower, more than a Z06.

There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that Chevrolet will add a Grand Sport variant to its Corvette lineup later this year. The new trim will allegedly arrive in two flavors, with an electrified version set to replace the Corvette E-Ray hybrid.

As first reported by Corvette Blogger, a recent Instagram post corroborates rumors that the publication has heard about the upcoming Grand Sport and its powertrain. The variant will allegedly pair General Motors’ new 6.7-liter LS6 V8 engine with a front electric motor to make 720 horsepower.

Chevrolet will allegedly name this version the Grand Sport X. The X will signify the electrified powertrain, like the ZR1X, which pairs the ZR1’s twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 engine with an electric motor for a combined 1,250 horsepower. There will also be a regular Grand Sport option.

If the Grand Sport X does replace the E-Ray, it will be significantly more powerful. The E-Ray’s 6.2-liter LT2 V8 and front e-axle motor make 655 hp. If the report is true, the new GSX would also be more powerful than the Z06, which makes 670 hp.

Or, maybe we’ll get a Z06X, too, just to ensure it continues to outperform the Grand Sport. We’ll have to wait and see.

Motor1’s Take: While electric vehicles might not be taking off, automakers are embracing some form of electrification with hybrids. Not only can an electric motor and battery increase efficiency, but they can also improve performance, as seen in the ZR1X.
