Najee Harris’ season is very likely over.

The Los Angeles Chargers running back left their contest with the Denver Broncos with an apparent non-contact Achilles injury on Sunday afternoon at SoFi Stadium. Harris took a few steps in the backfield at the start of a play in the second quarter when his left ankle just gave out as he planted. Harris didn’t make contact with anybody, and nobody was around him when he went down.

He was clearly in a lot of pain when he hit the field, and he was seen pounding the turf repeatedly after the play ended as the team’s medical staff came out to help him. Harris was eventually carted off the field.

While specifics are not yet known, it’s feared to be an Achilles injury. That would end his season. The Chargers initially called it an ankle injury for Harris and said he was questionable to return just before halftime.

Harris had six carries for 28 yards in the game when he went down. The 27-year-old, who is in his first season with the Chargers after striking a one-year deal with the franchise this past offseason, entered Sunday with just 33 rushing yards on nine carries so far this season. He was questionable to start the season due to an eye injury from a fireworks accident earlier this summer, but he was cleared to play in time for their season-opener.

The Chargers finished out that drive and capped it off with a 3-yard touchdown run from Omarion Hampton. That put them up 10-0 just before the break.
