Carson Hocevar won in the NASCAR Truck Series four times in 2023. He graduated to the Cup Series the following year and has been racing full-time there since.

He got behind the wheel of a truck for the first time since his promotion last week at Texas Motor Speedway and was unable to recapture that winning feeling, finishing 17th.

On Saturday at Kansas Speedway, the 22-year-old driver jumped into the No. 7 truck and was dominant, finishing fourth in the first stage, winning the second and leading a race-high 75 laps. Despite that dominance, there was uncertainty on who the race winner would be up until the checkered flag waved.

That’s because Layne Riggs, who started seventh on the race’s final restart with 21 laps remaining, made a massive charge through the field and caught up to the Spire truck as the pair crossed the start-finish line for the final white flag lap.

Going into Turn 1, the No. 34 driver got into the left rear of the No. 7, which started getting sideways before contact with the outside wall straightened the truck. Incredibly, the Front Row truck experienced a similar slide and contact with the wall also kept him straight. But the momentum was gone.

Going down the backstretch, Hocevar maintained the lead and coming out of Turn 4 with Riggs right behind him stuck his middle finger out the window as he crossed the finish line for the win.

Hocevar didn’t mention the hand gesture in his post-race interview. Riggs did.

“Last lap, I got to him a little bit, we both hit the wall,” Riggs said. “He won the race. I think he was mad at me. I think he flipped me off all the way down the front stretch coming to the checkered. How could you be mad when you win the race, right? But it’s all good.”
