Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner faced off for the first time in 2026 at the final of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Alcaraz claimed a maiden Australian Open crown in January but suffered a disappointing hard-court swing in the United States, failing to make the final in either Indian Wells or Miami.

Sinner won both of those tournaments to put behind him the disappointment of losing to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals in Melbourne.

Results this year meant the winner of this match on Court Rainier III would not only win the trophy, but also claim top spot in the ATP rankings.

Sinner was victorious, claiming a straight-sets win over his great rival to regain his position as world No. 1.

In so doing, the Italian became just the second man in history — after Djokovic in 2015 — to win the first three Masters tournaments of the season.

A gruelling battle of two hours and 15 minutes in blustery conditions swung Sinner’s way in the first-set tie-break, when Alcaraz served a double fault at set point.

The Spaniard, who seemed to find the conditions more troublesome than his opponent did, moved into a 3-1 lead in the second set after a game that went to deuce six times, only for Sinner to win the next five and take the title.

“We came here trying to get as many matches as possible, getting good feedback before other big tournaments coming up. Today was a high level from both of us,” Sinner said afterwards.

“It was a bit windy, a bit breezy. Different conditions from what the tournament has brought. The result is amazing. Getting back to No. 1 means a lot for me. I am very happy to win a big title on this surface, I haven’t done it before and it means a lot to me.”

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Jannik Sinner head-to-head

This is the 17th time Alcaraz has faced Sinner on the ATP circuit. The Spaniard leads the overall head-to-head 10-7.

This was Sinner’s 27th career title, which is one more than Alcaraz. Sinner has now won consecutive matches against Alcaraz for the first time since 2023, with the Murcia native having won seven of their previous eight meetings.

According to Opta, Sinner is only the second player born since the inaugural ATP season in 1990 to defeat the world No. 1 in finals on different surfaces. The only other male to do so? Alcaraz.

Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner playing record in 2026

Alcaraz’s record in 2026 is now 17-3. His prize money before today’s final for this year stood at $3,703,785.

After beginning the year by beating Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open, he won in Doha before losing to Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals of Indian Wells in early March.

He then surprisingly lost to Sebastian Korda in Miami, capping a frustrating hard-court swing ahead of the start of the clay season in Europe.

Sinner is now 20-2 for the year, which began with that epic five-set loss to Djokovic in the semifinals in Melbourne before a loss to Jakub Mensik in Doha. The Italian recovered to claim the famed ‘Sunshine Double’, winning both Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami. His prize money for 2026 prior to Monte Carlo was $3,215,260.

When can Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner play each other again?

Alcaraz is due to play in Barcelona this coming week, but Sinner did not enter that ATP 500 event.

The next tournament in which they are both due to compete is the Madrid Masters, which starts on April 22. Novak Djokovic is also on the entry list for the fourth Masters event of the season.

There are then three other tournaments — the Italian Open in Rome, plus lower-level competitions in Hamburg and Geneva — before the 2026 French Open begins on May 24.
