Cameron Young has suggested that he has tried to take influence from Justin Thomas’ set-up as he also commented on the famous pause within his own golf swing.
Young is likely to be a key man for Team USA over the coming days as he makes his return to the Presidents Cup. The 29-year-old won twice on the PGA Tour in 2026, including at The Players Championship.

He was also Team USA’s best player at last year’s Ryder Cup. It was Young who Keegan Bradley sent out first during the Sunday singles, and he vindicated that decision by beating Justin Rose as the American side threatened to stage the event’s greatest comeback.
Cameron Young comments on how he added a pause to his golf swing
Young is so powerful, and boasts one of the most recognisable swings on the PGA Tour. Of course, the feature that everyone knows about is the pause at the very top of the backswing.
For us mere mortals, it is hard to imagine how an elite player is able to generate such speed when they seem to virtually stop their swing halfway through.

And speaking in a video with Titleist, Young explained how he came to add the pause into his swing.
“It’s been there a long time. It’s hard to pinpoint when. I think it was kind of progressive, it started a little bit and then got more and more,” he said.
“I think it was in trying to change positions [at the top] that is where I ended up. Some of it is fake, I like to say, because some of it is my arm starting to bend as I start my downswing, so it makes it look like it’s hanging there a bit longer than it is. I don’t feel it, it’s just there.
“If I start to feel it, I know something is wrong and it’s probably too long but that hasn’t happened in a long time.”

He was also asked whether he would ever try to eliminate it from his swing in the future.
“I have just recently figured this out actually, watching other guys swing. It does start at the takeaway with speed, so if I start fast, it is faster. It’s just a matter that I haven’t practiced it that much, so it’s not something that I will try to do any time soon,” he said.
What Cameron Young has tried to take from Justin Thomas’ game
Young formed a superb partnership with Justin Thomas at Bethpage last year, with the pair beating Ludvig Aberg and Rasmus Hojgaard 6&5 on Friday afternoon. It was one of just two victories for Team USA on the opening day in New York.

And while they did lose to Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry on Saturday afternoon, it was Young and Thomas who won the first two matches out on Sunday to set the tone for a dramatic final day.
So perhaps it is not entirely surprising that Young looked to Thomas when asked whether he had taken anything from another player’s game.
“Someone whose set-up is really good is Justin Thomas, it’s phenomenal. Just from his structure at set-up. There are things I have tried to take from that,” he said.
“I don’t know if I have tried to wholesale copy somebody’s golf swing, but I have looked at the way they do things, and the more I have done that, the more I realise that my body is not the same as any of theirs, so it’s not supposed to work that way.”

Brandt Snedeker will surely look at pairing Young and Thomas together over the coming days at Medinah. It is one of the partnerships that Europe would surely have one or two concerns about coming up against at Adare Manor in 12 months.
