Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty is determined to lead his team to the College Football Playoff even if the Broncos’ defense struggles.

“No matter what it is, no matter what the defense does, I’m gonna do what I do,” Jeanty said after Sunday’s 42-21 win at San Jose State. “Work hard, earn every single yard that I can.”

Jeanty ran for 159 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 13 Boise State to an eighth straight win.

The effort marked the sixth time Jeanty recorded at least three touchdowns in a game this season. The Heisman Trophy candidate now has now recorded 1,893 rushing yards and 26 rushing touchdowns in 10 games.

The Broncos were forced to mount a comeback after falling behind early when San Jose State surged out to a 14-0 lead by the opening minute of the second quarter.

Boise State responded by holding the Spartans to seven points while scoring 42 in the final three quarters of the game.

The Broncos were still overall outgained, 483 yards to 456 yards, while allowing a season-high 446 passing yards from San Jose State offense. The victory marked the fourth time this season the Boise State pass defense, which was ranked 110th in the FBS heading into this weekend, has allowed an opponent to gain at least 300 yards through the air.

Those defensive issues haven’t stopped Boise State (9-1, 6-0 in-conference) from remaining on track to potentially earn a College Football Playoff spot with a Mountain West championship game win in large part thanks to the Broncos offense, which has scored at least 28 points in 10 straight games.

The Broncos will now lean on Jeanty and their run game as the team looks to win out against Wyoming and Oregon State.
