49ers star Brock Purdy is not a top-10 NFL quarterback, according to an article published Monday by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that included a total of 70 surveyed league executives, coaches and scouts.
Purdy was part of the “Also receiving votes” category, which included Kyler Murray (Arizona Cardinals), Dak Prescott (Dallas Cowboys), Aaron Rodgers (Pittsburgh Steelers), Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins) and Bo Nix (Denver Broncos).
Interesting — maybe even disrespectful.
Nonetheless, the voters collectively ranked the quarterbacks as such, in order from first through tenth: Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs), Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills), Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals), Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens), Jayden Daniels (Washington Commanders), Matthew Stafford (Los Angeles Rams), Justin Herbert (Los Angeles Chargers), Jared Goff (Detroit Lions), Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles) and Baker Mayfield (Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
The anonymous NFL personnel believe Purdy doesn’t belong with that bunch. But the 25-year-old has the numbers and success to hang with any of the league’s best signal-callers.
Purdy, the No. 262 overall and final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has thrown for 9,518 career yards and 64 touchdowns with a 23-13 record. He also has completed a sturdy 67.5 percent of 722 total passes and is one season removed from a Super Bowl LVIII berth — which San Francisco narrowly lost to Mahomes and Kansas City in overtime.
Maybe Purdy would bear a different league-wide perception if his 49ers took home what would’ve been the franchise’s sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy.
However, San Francisco knows the fourth-year veteran is capable of, having agreed to a massive five-year, $265 million contract extension with Purdy this offseason. He’ll have the chance to silence the doubters yet again as the 49ers aim to return to the playoffs during the 2025 NFL season.
