FC Barcelona are already planning out their transfer window operations for the summer of 2026, and a new striker seems to be at the top of the agenda.

After all, Robert Lewandowski will be out of contract at the end of the season, and a renewal might be unlikely, although any decision over his future will be made at a much later stage.

Barcelona will go for an ‘important’ striker

Amidst the speculations about Barcelona going big for a new centre-forward in the summer, Fabrizio Romano (h/t Carpetas FCB) has come forward with an update.

As per the Italian transfer expert, Barça will indeed target the signing of an ‘important’ striker in the summer of 2026.

Reports previously have suggested that Joan Laporta has made Atletico Madrid and Argentine forward Julian Alvarez his No. 1 target for the position.

Clarifying on that, Romano noted that Alvarez is indeed highly appreciated at Barcelona, which is only ‘normal’ considering his quality and proven pedigree.

However, only time will tell whether this appreciation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner turns into something more concrete come 2026.

After all, Atletico Madrid have Alvarez tied down to a long-term contract and have no need for a sale. Given that he is a central piece of their new project, the Rojiblancos will likely demand an outrageous sum if Barça do make an approach.

What has Alvarez said?

As for Alvarez, the striker was recently asked about the rumours linking him to Barcelona, which he downplayed, stating that he is fully focused on Atletico Madrid and not paying attention to media speculations.

“I’m very calm. There’s always talk, but the truth is that the season is just starting now. My focus is on improving every day, win for Atletico,” he said.

“That’s the only thing on my mind… social media stories are beyond me.”
