The first surprise of this Walker Cup arrived before anyone reached the first tee. Preston Stout, the world’s top-ranked male amateur, was supposed to receive the McCormack Medal at Thursday night’s gala at Lahinch. He was sick and missed the presentation. Ethan Fang and William Jennings also lost practice time because of stomach illnesses, Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine reported from Ireland.
All three were back doing at least some golf work Friday. U.S. captain Nathan Smith said they were available, and he placed Stout and Fang in the first American pairing Saturday morning.
