In a recent post on X, journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that Arsenal are in discussions to sign Bayer 04 Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie this summer. It has been mentioned that the Gunners prefer to agree on a loan deal with an obligation to buy the Ecuadorian talent next summer.

The 23-year-old had a decent campaign at Bayer Leverkusen as he produced a handful of impressive displays for them in the Bundesliga. Hincapie netted three goals and earned a couple of assists in 45 appearances for the German outfit last season in all competitions.

The Ecuadorian defender was a reliable presence when defending inside his half after he made 52 tackles, 40 blocks and 32 interceptions in the Bundesliga. He was even careful with his ball distribution as he completed 87.9% of his attempted passes in the German top tier (stats via fbref.com).

Hincapie’s current deal at the Bundesliga club will run out in the summer of 2029. Hence, Arsenal would have to launch a convincing offer if they are serious about acquiring his services in this transfer window.

Hincapie loves a tackle and can read the danger well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot, and is an accurate passer of the ball as well.

Standing at 1.84m, the Ecuadorian sensation can use his powerful frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. Hincapie is primarily a central defender but can also function as a left-back or play as a left-winger if needed. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League.

Hincapie would bring more bite and steel to Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta’s defence. He has what it takes to challenge for a regular starting place at the Emirates Stadium this season.

At 23, the best is yet to come from Hincapie as long as he continues to improve with each season. Thus, it makes sense for the Gunners to try everything they can to lure him to North London before the end of this summer transfer window.
