Facundo Oreja, assistant coach to Martín Anselmi, revealed that Cruz Azul offered him the head coaching position after the Argentine manager left for Porto.
According to what he said in an interview with Radio Brisas, Iván Alonso and Víctor Velázquez offered him the chance to continue the project in order to maintain the same playing philosophy.
Although the idea was appealing to him, Oreja decided not to accept and instead accompanied Anselmi to Portugal.
“When we left Cruz Azul, Iván Alonso and the president offered me the opportunity to stay with the first team to give continuity to the process. In the end, I told them no,” he commented.
The stint at Porto did not turn out as expected. The team was eliminated in the Europa League playoffs, finished third in the Portuguese league, and showed inconsistent performance throughout the season.
The final blow came at the Club World Cup, where they were eliminated in the group stage.
After just six months in charge and results well below expectations, Anselmi was dismissed along with his coaching staff.
