The Pittsburgh Penguins made their second trade in three weeks by acquiring Philip Tomasino from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round NHL draft pick.
Monday’s trade comes as both teams sit among the NHL’s bottom 10 clubs in the standings. Tomasino lost a roster spot in 29th-ranked Nashville, while the 27th-ranked Penguins seek a depth forward who can produce some points.
Tomasino, a 23-year-old who can play center or on the wing, has one assist in 11 games this season while averaging a career-low 11:18 of ice time. He was a healthy scratch on Nov. 23 and last played on Nov. 20 against the Seattle Kraken, recording no shots and a minus-1 rating in 10:48 of ice time.

Tomasino is signed through the 2024.25 season and carries an average annual value of $825,000 at the NHL level.

Drafted 24th overall in 2019, Tomasino recorded 11 goals and 21 assists for 32 points in 76 games during his rookie season in 2021-22. Since then, he split the last two seasons between the Predators and AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals. Tomasino had seven goals and 20 points in 41 NHL games last season and 18 points in 31 games in 2022-23.
The Predators get a 2027 fourth-rounder that originally belonged to the New York Rangers. They have nine picks in 2025, seven in 2026 and now eight in 2027.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, still has nine picks in 2027. And with Tomasino and his $825,000 average annual value at the NHL level, the Pens have about $1.1 million in current cap space, per PuckPedia.

The Penguins only have four players with at least 10 points this season, and only nine forwards have more than five points. They’ve used 18 forwards for their 12 slots so far this season, and they rank 25th in the NHL in goals-for per game, with 2.52.
On Nov. 12, the Penguins traded center Lars Eller to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a third-round pick in 2027 and a fifth-rounder in 2025.
