ARDMORE — The Ada High School boys golf team turned in its best round of golf of the season Monday at the Plainview Invitational.
The Cougars fired a 312 during the morning session and were in fourth place heading into round No. 2. Ada then shot a 340 over the final 18 holes to finish with an overall score of 652. That total left the Cougars in ninth place overall in the loaded tournament.
The tournament was played on two courses — the Dornick Hills Country Club and the Lakeview Golf Course.
“We had a decent day overall. The morning round was our best this year by far, but we slipped a good bit in the afternoon,” Ada boys golf coach Robbie Powell told The Ada News. “We are improving, we just have to continue to do that over the next couple of weeks.”
Oklahoma Christian School won the team title after shooting a 301-294—595. Host Plainview was next with a 293-311—604 and Heritage Hall settled for third place at 318-305—623. Kingston was three strokes back with a two-round total of 626.
The Byng Pirates finished with a 360-365—725.
Ada sophomore Drake Kanuch continued to be in contention for a medalist title. He fired a two-round score of 70-75—145 and tied for third place with Ben Lathrop of Heritage Hall.
Ainslie Stanford of OCS won the individual crown with a 68-74—142 and Jace Chaney of Plainview was runner-up at 67-77—144.
Couper Taylor-Rogers landed in the Top 20, finishing 16h with a 76-78—154.
Rounding out the Ada scoring was Brant Vest with a 175, Kash Taylor-Rogers with a 178 and Kale Fuller with a 187.
“Drake and Couper played well all day. The others played well in spots,” Powell said.
Sophomore Cason Kates was Byng’s top striker with an 86-83—169. He was followed by Ethan Presley and Everett Denney who both shot 181s.
Other Byng scores included Tyler Raney with a 194, Nate Belcher with a 210 and Braylon Schilreff with a 212.
The Cougars are at the Del City Invitational today, hosted by the Trosper Park Golf Course in Oklahoma City and travel to Wister Friday for the Southeast 6 Conference Tournament to be held at the Wolf Ridge Golf Course..
The Byng Pirates travel to the Punch Out at the Pointe April 24 at the Chickasha Point Golf Club in Kingston.
