St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn has been creating plenty of chatter in the rumor mill as of late.
On Feb. 6’s episode of TSN Insider Trading, NHL insider Darren Dreger reported that the Blues are testing Schenn’s trade market, and the talk surrounding the veteran forward has only increased.
In his most recent episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Schenn has generated plenty of interest around the league.
“I think in Schenn’s particular case, when his name got out last week, I think there was a lot of interest,” Friedman said. “I think a number of teams reached out, and I don’t know specifics, but I heard that he [Blues GM Doug Armstrong] asked a big price and not only that, but I think there were some teams that were told that ‘you just don’t have what I want for him.'”
Friedman also mentioned the Vegas Golden Knights as a team he could see targeting Schenn.
“When it comes to Brayden Schenn, in particular, the team that I look at and say, I don’t know if they have what St. Louis wants, but the team that immediately jumped into my mind was Vegas… Vegas really jumped into my mind because Brayden Schenn played for Kelly McCrimmon in the Western Hockey League… The one thing I’ve kind of felt is that you don’t underestimate Kelly McCrimmon. When he decides he wants someone, he will do what it takes to try to get that person.”
When looking at Vegas’ current lineup, it would be understandable if they made a push for Schenn. He could slot nicely in their middle six and would also give them another option for their penalty kill if acquired. He also fits into their gritty identity.
However, for Schenn to be traded to Vegas or any other team during this season, he would need to waive his full no-trade clause (NTC). Starting next season, his NTC changes to a 15-team no-trade list.
It will be intriguing to see if the Golden Knights end up making a serious push for Schenn from here. They are never afraid to make a blockbuster, and Schenn would be a big addition to a Vegas club that has Stanley Cup expectations.
