Musician Lil Wayne confirmed that he won’t be attending Sunday’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, his hometown, during a message on his Instagram Stories this past Tuesday.
“Y’all know I’m not going to be there this week, which means I guess there’s a seat to fill,” he said (h/t Ilana Kaplan of PEOPLE). “Shout out to New Orleans, but I’ve been working on something very special. I got something exciting coming for you Thursday, the 6th. Until then… I’m chillin’.”
Lil Wayne, who is from New Orleans, previously spoke about being snubbed as the Super Bowl halftime performer in favor of Kendrick Lamar during an appearance on The Skip Bayless Show last month.
While Lil Wayne performing in his hometown would have a nostalgic choice, Lamar is currently the biggest rapper going, fresh off of winning both song and record of the year at the Grammys for the Drake diss track, “Not Like Us.” He was a logical choice for the NFL given his place in the zeitgeist over the past year.
