Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim insists that it is now a “problem for everybody” that Pep Guardiola has decided to stay at Manchester City for two more years.
There had been an outstanding level of uncertainty surrounding the future of the 53-year-old prior to the recent international break, as Guardiola’s now-previous Manchester City contract was due to expire in the summer of 2025.
Having spent several months weighing up his options alongside input from his closest family members, a decision was taken by Guardiola during a two-hour conversation with Manchester City officials to extend his stay at the club by a further two years.
Guardiola’s stay into a tenth and eleventh season at the Etihad Stadium has sparked a belief from around English football that teams will not be able to compete for the title for an even longer period, following on from Manchester City’s four top-flight crowns in a row.
Speaking during a recent media conference in light of becoming Manchester United’s newest head coach, Ruben Amorim admitted that the contract extension of Guardiola at City will be “a problem for everybody” in football.
The 39-year-old explained, “I think it’s a problem for everybody but we have so much to do we cannot focus on anybody.”
The Portuguese coach continued, “We just have to focus on improving our club and not focus on the other clubs.
“It’s amazing, if you can beat that team it’s a good sign but we are focused on Manchester United.”
Despite the fears over what could come over the next two seasons given Pep Guardiola’s decision to remain at the club, Manchester City find themselves in a hugely challenging run of form.
With five successive defeats in a row, City were on track for a return to winning form as they led Feyenoord by a 3-0 scoreline in the 75th minute of Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League match-up, only to concede three times and share the points.
Manchester City travel to Merseyside on Sunday afternoon as they take on Liverpool in the Premier League hoping to turn around their form and prevent Arne Slot’s side from moving 11 points clear of the reigning champions with a win of their own.
