It’s not at the level of his beef with Drake over the summer, but Kendrick Lamar has caught the attention of Lil Wayne after calling him out on a track from his new album GNX that dropped on Friday.
In a post on X, Weezy wrote that he “shall destroy if disturbed” in response to Lamar’s diss.
Lamar’s diss of Lil Wayne was on the track “wacced out murals” when he raps:
“I used to bump Tha Carter III, I held my Rollie chain proud. Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down. …
“Got the Super Bowl and Nas the only one congratulate me. All these n—– agitated, I’m just glad it’s on they faces.”
Since Super Bowl 59 is being held in Lil Wayne’s hometown of New Orleans, he clearly seemed to think he would picked to headline the halftime show. It was announced in September that the NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation instead went with Lamar as the main act.
Lil Wayne was upset by the decision, saying in a video posted on Instagram it “broke” him and he was “just trying to put myself back together.”
Tunechi has continued to express his hurt feelings, most recently at Lil Weezyana Fest in New Orleans on Nov. 2 when he told the crowd the Super Bowl was “ripped away from me.”
While the feelings Lil Wayne has about not being selected as the halftime headliner, it’s not like he was promised the gig. It would have fit if he did get selected by virtue of his connection to the host city, but that’s not really a top priority for how the artist is picked anymore.
The last time it happened was for Super Bowl 56 when Dr. Dre headlined the show with a slew of guests including Lamar and Snoop Dogg for the show in Inglewood, California.
Dre is also connected to Apple Music, which has a naming rights deal with the Super Bowl Halftime Show, because Apple owns Beats by Dre.
Super Bowl 59 and the halftime show featuring Kendrick Lamar will take place on Feb. 9 at the Caesars Superdome.
