The Chicago Blackhawks have announced that they have called up one of their top goalie prospects from the AHL. Drew Commesso gets the call from the Rockford IceHogs where he has played all of this season and last.
Whether the callup could have something to do with the status of either Petr Mrazek or Arvid Soderblom remains to be seen, but this might mean Commesso appears in his first NHL game at the age of 22.
Commesso sported a 2.65 GAA and .906 SV% last season for the IceHogs, but his role has increased this season with Soderblom up in the NHL since the beginning of the season because of Laurent Brossoit’s injury. Commesso has a record of 2-4-0 with a 3.71 GAA and .874 SV% this season in the AHL.
Sometimes a goalie can struggle in the AHL and then perform better given a chance in the NHL. It has happened many times before, but I hope we get the chance to see what Commesso has in an NHL game this season. He is on the right track to become an NHL goalie at one point in his career and the Blackhawks would be fortunate if it was with them sooner than later.
Commesso is fourth on the depth chart of the Blackhawks among goalies, but Mrazek and Brossoit aren’t going to be on the team forever given their age and ability to stay healthy at times.

The Blackhawks drafted Commesso 46th overall in 2020 and he played well in the NCAA for three seasons before turning pro.
Soderblom is stepping up in a major way for the Blackhawks this season after a rough first full season in the NHL in 2023-24. While Commesso will be in competition to win a spot in Chicago over him in the future, the Blackhawks also have Adam Gajan, their top goalie prospect, turning pro soon.
There is a lot of competition in Chicago and that’s a good thing, but Commesso’s time to prove himself could come soon.
