The 1972 Miami Dolphins are the only team in NFL history to go undefeated and win the Super Bowl, and they’ll remain the only team to accomplish that feat after this season.
The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday after a 9-0 start, meaning there will be no perfect seasons in 2024.
Larry Csonka, a member of the legendary 1972 Dolphins team, was more than happy to see Kansas City fall and see his team’s record remain untouched for another year.
The Dolphins coasted to a perfect 14-0 record in the regular season before winning in the divisional round and AFC Championship. They took down Washington in Super Bowl 7.
Csonka, who was in his fifth season in the league, won Super Bowl MVP in the matchup.
After their win in 1972, the Dolphins won another championship in 1973, though they weren’t able to put together a perfect season that year. The Super Bowl in 1973 was the last time they won the Lombardi Trophy.
A few teams have come close to Miami’s historic 1972 season. The 1976 Oakland Raiders went 16-1 with a Super Bowl, the 1984 San Francisco 49ers went 18-1 with a championship and the 1985 Chicago Bears won a championship behind an 18-1 season. More recently, the Tom Brady-led New England Patriots went undefeated in the regular season in 2007 but lost to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl.
While there will be no undefeated season for the Chiefs this year, a 9-1 start is nothing to scoff at and they seem to be well on their way to competing for a third straight Super Bowl, which would give them their own bit of history.
The Bills, who have looked great behind an MVP candidate in Josh Allen, could be the team standing in their way when the playoffs come around.
