Olympique Lyonnais’ Pavel Šulc (25) revealed in an interview with the Czech daily Sport that he is playing at diminished capacity due to bone oedema.
“I have bone oedema and a bruised knee, and I’ll always have it. It doesn’t really bother me, but in certain situations it’s painful, especially on a hard pitch,” he explains. “Some days are better than others. At the moment, I’m in pretty good shape on match days.”

Whilst he says he doesn’t take painkillers, Šulc is nonetheless aware that his pain would require time to rest, which he doesn’t have. “When I’m not feeling well, I cut back on my playing time. The only treatment is rest – three months on crutches – and unfortunately, that’s not possible,” he says. “Perhaps next summer, with no tournaments, I could take a month’s rest and find a solution.”
Having picked up an injury at the start of OL’s pre-season, Šulc missed both the third qualifying round of the Champions League against Sparta Prague (2–1, 3–0) and the first leg of the play-off (he played for a quarter of an hour in the return leg), at the end of which Les Gones were knocked out by the Turkish side Fenerbahçe.
However, having featured in each of the first five Ligue 1 matchdays, Šulc has rediscovered his decisive form, providing three assists, including one in Lyon’s resounding victory over Stade Rennais (4–0).
