Longtime Los Angeles Lakers public address announcer Lawrence Tanter died on Wednesday, the team announced. He was 76.
“We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of legendary Lakers public address announcer Lawrence Tanter,” the Lakers wrote in a statement. “For 43 years, LT’s voice served as the soundtrack to Lakers games at the arena. He will be remembered as a cherished member of the Lakers family.”

The radio disc jockey narrated many memorable moments in team history, including the Lakers’ first game after the death of Kobe Bryant in Jan. 2020. Tanter introduced each member of the starting five that night the same way in honor of the franchise great.
During the NBA’s 2020 pandemic bubble season, Tanter recorded game introductions to recreate a home game atmosphere.
Tanter started with the franchise in 1982 and witnessed the Lakers win 10 NBA titles during his 43 seasons. He suffered a stroke last spring and missed the team’s final six home games and playoffs before announcing his retirement in June. He was set to take on a role in the organization as special adviser for game presentation.
