Previewing each NBA team as 2026-27 season approaches

As far as NBA offseasons go, this was a wild one.

There were blockbuster trades — with Giannis Antetokounmpo heading to the Miami Heat and Jaylen Brown going from the Boston Celtics to their Atlantic Division-rivals, the Philadelphia 76ers.

There were culture-swinging free agency decisions — most notably NBA icon LeBron James, the league’s leading scorer, opting to break away from the Los Angeles Lakers to join Brown in Philadelphia.

There were coaching changes and players re-signing max extensions, and there was — finally — the resolution to the Kawhi Leonard saga with the Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors.

Yet, all that said, everyone is chasing the New York Knicks, who went on a historic postseason run in June to snap a 53-year championship drought. Fans in New York celebrated the Knicks all summer long, and players have said the right things about not being satisfied with one title and wanting another. The core remains in place, but the reality is no team has repeated as NBA champions in eight seasons, since the Golden State Warriors did so in 2018.

The runner-up San Antonio Spurs will come out hungry, and the Oklahoma City Thunder remain a powerhouse. The 76ers, Heat, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers are also all candidates to emerge out East.

But the real work starts now, with NBA training camps set to open in late September.
