The Athletics opened their final road series of the year against the Cleveland Guardians on Friday night. The A’s offense faded after a strong first inning, while starter Mason Barnett and the bullpen combined to allow five unanswered runs in a 5-3 defeat, giving the A’s their 93rd loss of the season.

A’s Strike First

The A’s offense wasted no time against Guardians opener’ Daniel Espino. Center fielder Henry Bolte and right fielder Lawrence Butler walked. With one out, left fielder Zack Gelof hit his 19th home run of the season, a three-run shot to right center that put the visitors up 3-0 before the hosts got a chance to bat. That was the A’s first and only scoring chance of the game.
