On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts announced that the team has re-signed cornerback Johnathan Edwards to their practice squad and waived fellow corner Robert Carter Jr. in a corresponding roster move.
After being waived on Monday by Indianapolis, Edwards subsequently cleared league waivers. For now, the 24-year-old cornerback will remain within the Colts organization, with a chance to be eventually elevated again to their 53-man active roster.

The former undrafted cornerback out of Tulane was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Colts in the 2025 offseason. Due to injuries at the cornerback position, he even started in 5 games as a rookie last year, while also recording 26 tackles (19 solo) and 3 passes defensed in 14 games collectively during the 2025 campaign.
While Edwards struggled during this year’s preseason, the thought was that the Colts would keep him on the active roster as a lower depth backup due to his speed, athleticism, and potential special teams prowess.
That being said, he was a healthy scratch this past weekend against the Baltimore Ravens, which didn’t bode well for his 53-man active roster future. With Colts cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt having served his one game suspension, it became a numbers game within Indianapolis’ cornerback room, and Edwards was the casualty.
However, the Colts clearly liked him enough to keep him within their organization, and who knows, if another injury or two happen again, he could find himself right back on their 53-man active roster. He did show some initial promise as a rookie—albeit in limited action, even if some more recent struggles have since ensued.
