Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio found himself in controversy after being involved in a drunk-driving incident.

Los Blancos have now imposed a substantial financial penalty on the Spaniard following the disciplinary proceedings opened against the defender.

According to Defensa Central, the sanction is believed to be close to €100,000. Analyst Rodra has revealed that Asencio has already received punishment from Madrid.

Madrid take firm action against Asencio

The reported punishment is approaching €100,000, although it remains unclear whether Madrid now consider the disciplinary process completely closed.

The club’s frustration is also said to go beyond this particular incident. There is concern internally about an accumulation of problems involving Asencio.

However, Madrid do not consider what happened to be something that should end the defender’s career.

Similar off-field mistakes have happened with players at Madrid and elsewhere, but the club nevertheless considered this case serious enough to warrant a major financial sanction.

Mourinho still has Asencio in his plans

Asencio’s situation was already complicated before the disciplinary issue.

Jose Mourinho did not initially count on the defender when he returned to Madrid and requested another centre-back.

Asencio ultimately remained at the club and managed to change some of Mourinho’s thinking through his commitment and work in training.

Competition remains extremely difficult, however.

Ibrahima Konate and Dean Huijsen have established themselves as the preferred centre-back partnership early in the season, while Antonio Rudiger is another option and Eder Militao is working towards his return.

Asencio has put his foot in the mud, but Madrid are willing to give him another chance.

The financial punishment sends a clear message about the standards Madrid expect away from the pitch and sets a template for other players in the squad.

For Asencio, the response now has to come through professionalism.

He needs to recover from injury, return to training, remain disciplined and take whatever opportunities Mourinho gives him. Breaking into Madrid’s defensive rotation was already going to be difficult.

After this episode, proving he can be trusted both on and off the pitch has become just as important as proving his quality as a defender.
