Manchester United’s Champions League return could not have started any better.

Michael Carrick’s side raced into a three-goal lead before the interval against Sabah in their first involvement in Europe’s elite club competition since the 2023/24 season.

Matheus Cunha’s opener in the 27th minute was followed by two goals in quick succession from Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Šeško right at the end of the half.

But it was the latter efforts which will have pleased the Old Trafford faithful with both of the Red Devils’ strikes coming from expansive football and a collective team effort.

No fewer than seven players made Fernandes’ goal possible while five also coalesced as Šeško compounded the Azerbaijani champions’ misery at the Theatre of Dreams.
