Here on Labor Day, in the midst of a heat wave, the Arizona Diamondbacks come to a cooler environment than Phoenix for a series. The 76-68 D-Backs are hanging on to the third Wild Card slot in the NL, with a half-game lead over the San Diego Padres. The Royals can play spoiler a little bit, if they like.
The D-Backs will start Derek Law on the hill in today’s game. He will turn 36 in a week, and he’s purely a reliever. He’s one of those guys who has bounced around over the years; he’s on his 7th team since breaking through with the San Francisco Giants 10 years ago. He’s thrown only four innings this year after having missed all of 2025 due to right forearm inflammation. He was last seen as a reliever for the Nationals in 2024 and put together a solid season for them.

In short, it’ll be a bullpen game from the D-Backs.
The Royals will put new staff ace Noah Cameron on the mound. His last start was against Miami, and he gave up four runs in five innings but had excellent K/BB numbers. He gives the Royals as good a chance as any pitcher they have for a win. Unfortunately, Jac Caglianone remains out of the lineup. With John Rave in right field, Matthew Lugo gets the start in left field. The 25-year-old was hitting .271/.320/.531 in Omaha prior to his callup.
